Founding history
The Soleil d'Afrique Foundation was founded in 2000 by Dr. Julia Bucher, a physician. In 1995, she completed a several-month internship at the hospital in Gondar, Ethiopia, and as a young doctor, witnessed children dying daily in the pediatric ward simply because adequate medical supplies were unavailable. Deeply affected by this, Julia decided to take action upon her return to Switzerland. Initially on a small scale, later with the support of her family and friends, she regularly funded and sent larger quantities of medical supplies to Gondar. She was always able to rely on the collaboration of Dr. Shitaye Alemu, the chief internist at the University Hospital in Gondar. Thus, she founded the Soleil d'Afrique Foundation, and in addition to the hospital project, other projects were added: the school building project, the scholarship project, and most recently, the eye clinic project.

Purpose of the foundation
Soleil d'Afrique's priorities include supporting existing local medical structures and promoting equal opportunities for children in Gondar, Ethiopia. A key objective of the foundation is to act in a needs-based manner. To this end, we maintain regular contact with local professionals and always strive to ensure unbureaucratic and efficient support.
